Tax Season Is Over: What Comes Next? Your Post-Filing Checklist

4/16/2025

Tax season has come to an end, and whether you filed early or scrambled to submit at the last minute, you’re probably relieved to have it behind you. But your financial responsibilities don’t stop when you hit "submit." Taking a few key steps now can help you stay organized, avoid surprises, and prepare for a smoother tax season next year.
Checklist
Here’s a post-filing checklist to keep your finances in order and set yourself up for success.

1. Confirm That Your Tax Return Was Accepted

If you e-filed, you should have received a confirmation from the IRS or your state tax agency. If you filed by mail, it may take a few weeks to process. Checking your return status ensures that it was received and is being processed.

How to Check:
  • For federal returns: Use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
  • For state returns: Check your state’s tax agency website.

If you discover any issues, such as a rejected return, act quickly to correct errors and resubmit. If you're unsure how to resolve an issue, consult with a qualified CPA to prevent further complications.

2. Track Your Refund or Plan for Payments

Expecting a Refund?
If you're owed a refund, it can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on how you filed and whether you chose direct deposit. Be sure to:
  • Check the IRS website for estimated refund timelines.
  • Avoid scams—only use official government websites to track refunds.
Owed Taxes?
If you had a tax bill instead of a refund, make sure you:
  •  Pay as soon as possible to avoid penalties and interest.
  • Set up a payment plan with the IRS if you can’t pay in full.

3. Review Your Tax Return for Opportunities

Once the stress of filing is over, take a moment to review your return. This can help you identify ways to optimize your financial planning for next year. Ask yourself:
  • Did I owe more than expected? Adjust your withholdings or estimated payments.
  • Did I receive a large refund? You may be overpaying throughout the year.
  • Did I miss any deductions or credits? Keeping better records could save you money next time.

If you're unsure how to adjust your withholdings, maximize deductions, or improve your tax strategy, a CPA can provide guidance to help you make the most of your finances.

4. Organize Your Tax Documents

Organizing documents
Now is the perfect time to store your tax documents safely. This includes W-2s, 1099s, deduction receipts, and investment statements. Keeping these organized now can save you time and frustration next year.
  • Create a digital or physical folder labeled "2025 Taxes."
  • Store important receipts for potential deductions.
  • Keep track of major life changes (marriage, new child, home purchase) that could impact your taxes.

5. Plan for Next Year’s Taxes Today

It’s never too early to start preparing for the next tax season. Consider these proactive steps:
  • Adjust your withholdings to avoid owing taxes next year.
  • Maximize retirement contributions to reduce taxable income.
  • Keep track of deductions throughout the year, rather than scrambling in April.
